Sonam Tshering is a Senior Lecturer currently teaching laws of contract and procedure. He was appointed as a Junior Lecturer at Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law in the Spring of 2017. Sonam holds, Masters ( LL.M) degree from George Washington University Law School (USA).He completed his law degree (LL.B) from New Law College, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune, India and his Post Graduate Diploma in National Law (PGDNL) from the Royal Institute of Management, Thimphu. He also received his B.Sc. (Biological Science) from Sherubtse College, Trashigang. Prior to joining JSW Law, Sonam served as a Legislative/ Legal Officer at the National Assembly Secretariat. He also worked as the Committee Secretary to the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament as well as the Committee Secretary to the Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly of Bhutan. He also served as a Legal Advisor and Asst. Legal Officer as well as Media Spokesperson at the Bhutan Narcotic Control Authority & Narcotic/ Tobacco Control Board where he was fully involved in the drafting of and implementation of the Tobacco Control Act and Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substance and Substance Abuse laws. For his contribution in the field of tobacco law implementation, he received the Regional Director’s Award, South East Asian Regional Organization, WHO for World No Tobacco Day, 2012.
He also worked as Trainee Reporter for Radio Department, Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation where he was awarded the First Media Fellowship Award from Center for Science and Environment based in New Delhi, India. He has also published several articles and papers for the Bhutan Law Review and in the print media and other publications. His areas of interest are laws of contract, arbitration, procedural laws and litigation.
